About Sofina Foods

Sofina Foods Europe is one of Europe’s leading food producers, operating 23 sites across the UK, Ireland, France and Germany as part of the Canadian-headquartered Sofina Foods group. Its portfolio includes some of the UK’s best-known food brands, including Young’s Seafood and Karro.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the company’s operations. Facing rising energy costs and increasing expectations around ESG performance, Sofina sought a renewable energy solution aligned with its environmental values, without compromising operational efficiency or requiring upfront capital investment.

The challenge

Sofina Foods faced a dual challenge: reducing carbon emissions across energy-intensive food manufacturing sites while improving long-term financial resilience against volatile energy markets.

Each site presented distinct constraints. At Haverhill, an area of contaminated land within the site boundary had long sat unused. A dormant asset with no productive purpose, where ground conditions meant certain building practices were not permitted. At Fraserburgh in Scotland, the site’s energy demand exceeded what either roof space or ground area alone could serve. A standard, single-technology approach would not work, meaning that the solution had to be engineered around the specific circumstances of each site.

AMPYR Distributed Energy’s solution

AMPYR Distributed Energy’s delivery partner, Eden Sustainable, designed and delivered a bespoke 2.27 MW solar solution across the two sites under a Power Purchase Agreement, requiring zero upfront cost and placing no debt on Sofina’s balance sheet.

At Haverhill, the contaminated land was put back to work. With conventional construction methods restricted by the ground conditions, the array was carefully planned and engineered around those constraints, converting land that could not otherwise be developed into a long-term source of low-cost, low-carbon power for the site.

At Fraserburgh, a ground-mounted array was constructed to meet the site’s energy needs. Across both sites, south-facing panels were optimally angled for maximum solar capture, with each system tailored to the energy demand profile of the individual facility.

Implementation and delivery

The projects were delivered with full turnkey support, with every aspect managed in-house. From planning and legal through to grid connection and construction, ensuring a seamless experience for Sofina and minimal disruption to food production operations at both sites.

At Haverhill, delivery demanded particularly careful planning: with certain building practices not permitted on the contaminated ground, installation methods were adapted to work within the site’s constraints while maintaining full compliance throughout. A transparent and collaborative approach, combined with shared sustainability values and a proven delivery track record, underpinned the partnership across both sites.

Results and impact

The 2.27 MW of installed capacity is projected to save Sofina over £85,000 annually on electricity costs while reducing carbon emissions by 462 tonnes each year

These results support Sofina’s environmental goals while strengthening its financial position through predictable, lower-cost energy. By generating renewable electricity on site, the installations reduce reliance on grid electricity and exposure to energy price volatility and at Haverhill, land that once sat idle now delivers measurable value to the business every day.

    The value to the customer

Beyond the immediate carbon and cost benefits, the project demonstrates how site-specific engineering can unlock value where standard solutions cannot. Regenerating otherwise undevelopable land at one site and combining technologies at another to meet real operational demand.

The fully funded PPA model means these benefits have been secured without capital expenditure or balance sheet impact, strengthening Sofina’s ESG position while keeping investment focused on its core food production business.

    Looking ahead

AMPYR Distributed Energy and Sofina Foods continue to explore opportunities to extend on-site renewable generation across the wider European estate, alongside potential battery storage and optimisation technologies to further enhance resilience, flexibility and long-term energy performance.
